What is Web Hosting?
• Your registered domain name which forms the URL is hosted on the registrars Domain Name Server (DNS) this has records for the domain name one is a Host record for www that points to the IP of the web server that is hosting your website.
• Web servers and other hosting services can be used the same IP but use different ports on that server, a web server thou would normally respond on port 80 for normal web requests and port 443 for secure encrypted or SSL page requests.
• A Web Server is a computer that stores on its hard drive web pages that are written in a Hyper Text Markup Language or HTML that have the information or catalogue data in that your business wants to promote and make available.
What is a Domain Name, DNS, Server and IP address?
Domain Name
A Domain Name, TLD or registered domain is a piece of text that identifies computers to you or your business and it comprises of a record on the root Domain Name Servers (DNS) that identifies to other computers, the servers that will respond to the query’s made against it. It is normally either the name of the business, brand or product that most commonly get used, but it can be any text/keywords you want as long as it is not already in use. Different countries and more recently named service extensions are used on the end.
The most common ones are .com and country which is .co and a two letter indicator like for the UK .co.uk, although since the release of the newer extensions .info, .cafe, .repair and so on are now available.
DNS
This is the server that responds to TLD or top level domain requests, the domain name servers are linked together and query one another when a request is made for the record that points to the server of that request. Domain name servers have various records on that give the requester’s access to the relevant computer information, like where the emails are to go and where the web server is are just some of the information contained in these records.
Server
Servers are computers on the internet that are configured to be continuously on, with high amounts of RAM and CPU processing power to deliver the services they are setup for like email, database or web pages and so on.
IP Address
This is a computer address on the internet, that is a bit like a telephone number in the sense its unique to that server and each server on the internet has its own unique IP address to identify it from the others, it is made up from four decimal numbers representing 8 bits or a value between 0-255 each separated by full stops like 192.168.0.1, but there are some extra rules for private LAN networks were a Class A, Class B and Class C address have been allocated for business and private networks but were not talking about private networks but more the internet a public network.
What is a Static IP and can I have one?
All web servers or any server on the public network or internet used for providing a service will have static IP address, but sometimes it is desirable to have your own dedicated IP address that is a static IP Address that no one else will be using just your web site or service, as web servers normally use host headers to allow thousands of web sites to run from a single IP address.
What is FTP and do I need it?
The file transfer protocol is used to transfer web pages, images, video and other files up to the web server, although FTP is not the only method as depending on the server and its configuration web authoring maybe setup and upload may be achievable through http or the hypertext transfer protocol which is used mainly for web page delivery, note in the top of your browser in the address bar the bit at the begging of the URL http://, but ftp does have its benefits like uploading large amounts of data quickly and draw backs, as FTP was not designed as a secure protocol leaving it susceptible to brute force, bounce back, spoofing and other types of internet/network attacks.
What is a Security Certificate?
This is a file that contains a table used for encrypting purposes, there are occasions that require you to use them and sometimes just best practice would also mean their use, for instance a e-commerce web shop processing credit card payments would require one, and good practice would be to use https for logins as well but there are various types, like self-signed these are generated by the web server itself and the server looks after its on CRL Certificate Revocation List or a log of bad certificates that are no longer in use, but for web shops a certificate authority will need to be used as the retain information on compromised and bad certificates so this links back to their CRL server and this makes the certificate not display the red or pink bar or other representation the certificate may have an error but more a green bar or no messages about certificate at all.
What is SSL?
