We have created a brief outline of what web design involves with a little on the technologies and terminology that you will experience along the way and we have incorporated a section on what results you could expect from us at Compunet Systems if you decide to choose us to develop your ideal web site.
What is a website?
• A universal resource location or URL this is made up mainly from your registered domain name and sometimes a / and the page file name or identifiers for a CMS systems.
• A web hosting service which is hard drive space on a server running web server services like Internet Information Server or Apache Web Server.
• Web pages stored on the webserver that are written in a Hyper Text Markup Language or HTML that have the information or catalogue data in that your business wants to promote and make available.
What is html, XHTML, html5, CSS, CSS3 and JavaScript?
HTML
As mentioned earlier HTML or the Hyper Text Markup Language is the code used to display webpages, it is the mesh that holds the layout together, importantly is that the amount of code used and use of correct formatting of the code have an influence on the pages ranking in search engines like google. There are various versions of HTML the latest being HTML5 and with new versions with most things and not unlike HTML each new version brings its own new extra functionality for greater control over the layout, forms, graphics and media control. – Link to w3c tutorial on HTML
XHTML
This is another version of HTML the Extensive Hypertext Markup Language but it has a more stricter syntax, that is to say were in HTML you may get away with small errors or bugs if you want to call them that but fundamentally if you forget a closing tag in HTML all is not lost, the page will display most of the time correctly but with XHTML the code must be well formed with the correct syntax.
CSS
CSS or cascading style sheets as they are known is a file that contain layout information on how HTML elements are to be displayed like their colours, sizes, fonts and more, it is a good idea to use cascading style sheets as it helps improve performance and reduces the amount of code in the HTML files that help with page rankings in search engines results. Just like HTML there have been improvements in cascading style sheets and CSS3 is that latest version with improved functionality.
JavaScript
This is a client side, or put another way a piece of code that is on a website and when visited by your computer browser the JavaScript is executed in a secure virtual machine on your computer and the results are presented back in the browser. JavaScript is used for a wide range of tasks from style and looks to preloading database query’s and analytic reporting and much more even browser based games have been written in JavaScript.
What is responsive design and do I need it?
This is a website that has a script running normally JavaScript that requests identifiers from the clients browser which help identifies the device the user is viewing the web page with, armed with this information the JavaScript decides what cascading style sheet to use so as to display the page in the required compatibly of the device being used so as to allow menus to work better and for text sizes and layout are at a readable format for both computer, tablet and mobile phone devices.
What is a CMS system and is it a website?
When websites get large or just for simplicity of editing and adding articles or perhaps extra functionality is required then a CMS or Content Management System could be used so for instance with larger sites it can become harder to manage all the content like offers that have expired or articles that are now out of date and so on, so a content management system helps organize articles, blogs and posts in a database for easy editing. CMS systems are normally server side scripts in PHP or Perl but there are plenty of others in other computer languages but the more popular are in PHP like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and my very own CMS with web shop or as I like to call it a sales platform eShopBox®.
What is SEO?
The term SEO is used to mean search engine optimization, this is the process of looking in to specific keywords and or phrase that your business would like to use to target people searching for those phrases that contain these keywords from the search engine search, for instance a car dealer would aim at words like motor car and new car or vehicle and perhaps the area they are in, then once these keywords have been identified the site content, headers, titles and all the other optimizations are put into place so the website has a higher chance of being on the top of the organic search results, that is at the top of the none (PPC) or pay per click adds for those search words. It is recommended after web design has taken place search engine optimization should be considered to help promote your site and gain a higher page ranking which will help with getting those traffic clicks which increase your sites popularity factor which also helps in climbing up the search engine results pages.
What results can I expect?
After the works are completed the website is zipped up that is compressed in a windows executable file and delivered by either email attachment or internet download, this then can be unzipped or the executable has built in ftp, that is file transfer functions in it which means no extra software will be required to upload your site to your hosting provider, fast, efficient and easy.
What extra steps can I do to promote and drive traffic to my site?
Promote the URL on business cards and stationary.
Add the URL to any advertising adds that your business has.
Look into SEO and SEM
If you’re using a CMS system, look into plugins that could improve the SEO of your articles/pages.
